MMA News: 16 Dec – PPV Sales

Posted by admin on December 16, 2011

UFC will return as you know to Brazil on January 14. This time they have again choosen Rio de Janeiro as the place of the event.

Not unexpectedly, they have put an Brazilians in every game and that will make the audience have a home favorite to cheer. The UFC 142: Aldo vs Mendes and the main game is thus between the title holder in the featherweight, Jose Aldo and challenger Chad Mende.

For over ten years ago, Forrest Griffin’s made his MMA debut and the first match was against legendary Dan Severn. Griffin lost the first trial by Unanimous Decision, but it did not stop him. Griffin went on and won eight games in a row against Chael Sonnen, Travis Fulton and Jeff Monson before veteran Jeremy Horn put an end to the victories.

In the end, UFC got their eyes on him and he enrolled in the first season of The Ultimate Fighter where he fought Stephan Bonnar in a wild final match in April 2005.

At present, the current rumor is that Griffin will be set against Tito Ortiz for the third time, a match Griffin would not back down on.

UFC never releases any public figures for their sales of pay-per-views (PPV), they tend instead to provide number of visitors to events and the total value of tickets sold. But according to information available, the average sales of pay-per-views in 2009 is 620,000 per event. The best-selling show in UFC history took place this year, when UFC 100: Lesnar Vs. Mir 2 scooped 1,600,000 sold PPVs.

During last year they sold an average of over 600,000 PPVs per show with the highlight of UFC 116: Lesnar vs Carwin that sold 1,160,000 and the worst-selling in UFC 109: Relentless where Randy Couture and Mark Coleman in the main match only attracted 275,000 buyers.

During the year, there has been low sales figures that have averaged about 366,000 sold PPVs. The previous best-selling show has been UFC 129: St-Pierre Vs. Shields to have involved 800,000 PPVs.

The figures for UFC 140 are not clear but according to Wrestling Observer there have been around 480,000 sold. This is a good figure, although it is rumored that the UFC had hoped for over half a million.

I think that UFC 141 with Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem will top this year’s best-selling PPV and clean up the sales figures for the UFC. When Lesnar is on the card it usually means good sales.

UFC has basically robbed Strikeforce on talent, and during yesterday’s press conference it became clear that they will shut down the heavyweight division altogether. They will also close down Strikeforce: Challengers. The good news is that they still came to an extended contract with Showtime.

To be honest i am not shocked by this decision but i think strikeforce has lost something in the last year and UFC has become better. We will see if strikeforce will be around in a couple of years.

MMA News: 8 dec – Georges St. Pierre suffers an injury

Posted by admin on December 8, 2011

Yesterday it was announced that Georges St. Pierre suffered a knee injury and that he therefore must withdraw from the planned title match against Carlos Condit at UFC 143rd.

St. Pierre and his physician, Dr. Simard, via a teleconference told about the events and said that he must have had trouble with both his knees for some time and that he must have an operation. The doctor believes that the success of the surgery is 95% and given St. Pierre’s amazing ability to recover, he will be restored within six to nine months.

After UFC on Fox 1: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos it turned out that Junior dos Santos has injured his knee a few days before the gala, he kept quiet about the whole thing and did the game anyway, and was in the process even the UFC heavyweight champion after defeating Cain Velasquez via a knockout just 64 seconds into the match.

So today it was time for the Dos Santos knee surgery, his team today reported that it was a successful operation. Dos Santos will be back in training facilities in 20-30 days if all goes as it should.

But in the meantime, he’ll certainly be watching with interest the main event at UFC 141: Lesnar vs Overeem, the winner between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem will be the next person to challenge Dos Santos for the heavyweight title.

Tito “Peoples Champ” Ortiz currently has two games left on his contract in the UFC. After this it sounds like pension is not far away for him, and he has now even started talking about the last person he wants to face in his career. His Next game is already at UFC 140 against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, but Ortiz has already started planning for his last fight in the UFC. When Ortiz and Griffin met at UFC 106 Griffin won the match via a Split Decision. One last game against Griffin maybe the last we will see of Tito Ortiz.

Chris “Cyborg” Santos is considered by many as the pound-for-pound best female fighter on the planet. She has only lost one match in her career, and that was her debut match. It was via a kneebar in May 2005. Since then she has totally dominated all those she met, and now she sits with 10 straight wins with eight knockouts and a MMA record of 10-1. All these games have been in the female feather weight of 145lbs. The major problem that Cyborg have is the difficulty for the organization to acquire worthy opponents for her. But while she has also had some contract problems with Strikeforce, which indeed is now solved. But in the current situation, it was 1.5 years ago Cyborg went a match, when she knocked January Finney via a knee to the body.

MMA News: 3 Dec

UFC on Fox: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos struck a new record in the U.S. with 5.7 million viewers. Just a week later Fedor Emelianenko went with Jeff Monson in the cage in Moscow and swept the path with the UFC.

According to a report from M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Monson had 7.5 million viewers, only in Russia. Then there was the possibility to buy the show via streaming PPV over the internet, and these numbers they haven’t revealed, so in the end it was much more than 7.5 million viewers worldwide.

But the report isn’t totally correct, because it was not all those viewers who watched the event live. Overall, it was 4.9 million viewers who watched the event live, plus those who watched at it through a stream. But that alone is not exactly bad numbers. Te show was the most watched sporting event from November 14 to 20 in Russia. I wasn’t surprised when i saw these numbers because this match was huge and it delivered i think.

Luke Rock got the chance to challenge Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza for the middleweight title in Strikeforce. After five rounds the American Rock Hold was the new champion via unanimous decision. Now it seems Keith Jardine can be the first to challenge Rock Hold on his title.

Recently, the general discussion of Strikeforce’s has revolved around if the organization will continue to exist or if the owner Zuffa will choose to settle after the contract with Showtime is over. Very little energy has been put on as to who will challenge the Rock Hold on his title, especially when many fighters have left Strike Force for a period to bigger brother the UFC

But recently it was announced that the Strike Force 38 will be held January 7 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. The idea was that Tim Kennedy would be first in line for a chance at the title, but an unspecified injury prevented him from taking the place and therefore Strikeforce instead have chosen Jardine.

The choice of Jardine can be seen in many different ways but in my opinion it obvious that Strike Force dont have the real to fighters anymore or not enough of them. “The Dean of Mean” has gone 3-6-1 in his last ten games, he has not competed in the weight class earlier and his last major win came against Brandon Vera at UFC 89 for over three years ago. Despite this, he gets a title match.

Jon Jones has his fourth match scheduled at UFC 140 next Saturday December 10. A match in which he will defend his belt at light heavyweight against Lyoto Machida in the main event at the gala. Both guys prefer to keep their distance and work inwards towards his opponent. I think this will be an great fight and i hope that they really give everything they got, i really cant say who will win but i hope that we will get to see an great match.

In early March, a match has been booked between the Dane Martin Kampmann who will face Thiago Alves in a yet unannounced gala on March 3, according to a report by MMAWeekly.

When the report appeared Kampmann tweeted that he hadn’t heard anything and that the rumor was not true, but only a moment ago so he wrote a new twitter message that was a bit more encouraging. He says that he just had an chat with Joe Silva.

Kampmann comes recently from UFC 139 last weekend, where he defeated Rick Story via a Unanimous Decision. The two rulings before that was not as kind to him, and he lost two matches in a row. The first one against Jake Shields in a controversial Split Decision, and then immediately afterward against Diego Sanchez in an even more controversial unanimous decision. So he has an MMA record which currently stands at 18-5.

Alves also comes fresh from a match, at UFC 138 when he defeated the Swede Papy Abedi in the first correct submission win of his career. Before that, he lost, however, against Rick Story in a unanimous decision, the person who defeated Kampmann at UFC 139th.

The BOPE police Paulo Thiago that fights in the UFC in his spare time have a new game. The opponent is Mike Pyle and the two will meet at UFC 142 which is in the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro on 14 January.

Thiago is one of the most popular fighters in Brazil because he works in the BOPE who daily fight against drugs in the country.

Crowd favorite Thiago is coming from a win against David Mitchell at UFC 134th Before that, he had two straight losses to Diego Sanchez and Martin Kampmann. He currently has a record of 14-3.

Mike Pyle is sitting with a record of 21-8-1 and is coming from a loss against Rory MacDonald at UFC 133rd Before that, he had two straight wins against Ricardo Almeida and John Hathaway.

The Swede Reza “Mad Dog” Madadi has signed a contract with the UFC. He will make his debut at UFC on FOX on Jan. 20 against Rafaello Oliveira, a match which will be broadcast on the preliminary card.

Reza has six consecutive victories, his last was against Rich Clementi at Superior Challenge 7, a controversial match he won via a unanimous decision. A match that also made him the first Superior Challenge lightweight champion. Before then, however, he managed to defeat the Brazilian Carlo Prater via a much less controversial unanimous decision, and he also ended TUF Celebrity Junie Browning via a guillotine just 22 seconds into the second round ,overall Reza has amassed an MMA record of 11-2 when he will step into the UFC cage at the end of January.

His opponent Rafaello Oliveira is from Brazil and is currently going with a MMA record of 14-5. This is his second turn in the UFC, where he in his last round defeated John Gunderson, but lost to Nik Lentz and Andre Winner via two unanimous verdict. It meant that he was not welcome in the organization longer, and had to find a pair of wins outside. Oliveira won four straight wins in various organizations and was welcome back. So far in his second round in UFC he has had time for two games, and unfortunately two straight losses to Gleison Tibau and Yves Edwards.
